Nature Walks and Nature Study
"We are all meant to be naturalists, each in his own degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things." --Charlotte Mason
Something you may hear homeschool families mention is “nature studies” or “nature walks,” (a la Charlotte Mason). It’s simple. Toss on your adventure boots, grab some binoculars and whatever gear makes your kids ready to explore—mine have a camera/map/compass obsession—and head our to discover things!
With a bird or plant guide (or Google on your smartphone!) you can identify what you see, explaining categorization of flora and fauna, recognize ecosystem and get your kids engaged in multiple levels!
Some of our best conversations have happened exploring the woods around our house—and we learn useful safety precautions, too (“don’t step on rattlesnakes”)!
Check out my next post for follow-up or how to adjust for inclement weather!
